Virginia Barrette

Senior Program Director

Virginia Barrette joined the SPPG + Essman Research team as a Senior Program Director in 2022.

With over 10 years of experience in nonprofit, healthcare and advocacy, Virginia is best known for her relentless passion to serve the community. Her abilities for managing projects has impacted statewide and national organizations, including Iowa Primary Care Association and American Cancer Society. Most recently, she responded to the pandemic by using her expertise as a COVID Program Manager for Primary Health Care to ensure COVID-19 testing and vaccination are available and accessible; this required her leadership for rapid cycle improvements and strong government reporting processes.

Virginia constantly seeks new challenges, and this is shown well in her education. She studied both biology and finance, graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration from University of Iowa’s Tippie College of Business. Then, she completed her Master of Health Care Administration from Des Moines University. Now, she’s always on the search for a webinar, course, or certification!

While she would describe her volunteerism as more of a pleasure than a challenge, the list is longer yet. Virginia holds positions focused on fundraising for Young Women’s Resource Center, GO Red for Women, and Telligen Community Initiative. She is currently serving her second term on the Iowa Public Health Association’s Board of Directors. She also supports the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Virginia believes everyone wants to be a part of the solution. What she appreciates most about SPPG + Essman Research is the ability to build consensus in a time a where there seems to be less common ground. She values the duality of our team’s work ethic and creativity to identify a problem and formulate a solution – and she plays an important role in making this happen.

Best Piece of Advice I’ve Been Given
  • “Go hard or go home!” I’m not sure if I’ve ever been given that advice or that’s just how I live my life. I heard that phrase at some point in my life and it resonated. If you’re going to do something, do it. Don’t just kinda do it.
