If you would detour past Donna Reed Boulevard in Denison and continue into the country to the Brus farmstead, you still might find remnants of Dinosaur Park. That’s where Erich, his brothers would pull together makeshift goals and line markings to go no-holds-barred in a roller hockey game. While he played soccer and ran cross-country in high school, he eventually took off the wheels and put on blades.
While in high school geometry class, Erich realized his fascination with shapes. He new he liked creating things, given his families penchant for re-building bicycles and farm equipment, and decided he wanted to go to college and be a graphic designer. Brus enrolled at the University of Northern Iowa and received a BFA in graphic design. He played competitive ice hockey wherever he could find it in central Iowa, but for two years still found the time to be Managing Editor of the Northern Iowan, the student newspaper. Soon after graduating, he joined SPPG.
Erich’s early fascination with shapes and his drop dead creativity lends a greater dimension to SPPG’s materials and web sites. “I like to bridge the two sides of the brain and when I cross over, I want to remember things from the other side and apply it in my work. And working with shapes is still so enjoyable. I enjoy the boundaries certain projects give me, but I approach them in a way to create while still allowing for the space that is necessary.”
Brus created SPPG’s new logo and all the ancillary materials as part of changing the look of SPPG. Given that SPPG had never previously made adaptations to its 1984 logo, Erich patiently directed the process for the revisions. “I wanted to demonstrate in the new logo what drives us and at the same time, build on the identity of 25 years of work.”
Brus is always learning new techniques, new technologies, and is instrumental as a part of all project teams. He sees the future of art in the technical world, but he doodles and draws first as he considers every project put in front of him. Then he attacks the project much like he would a forward in the neutrual zone as the right defender on his hockey team, as he did at Dinosaur Park on the family farm outside Denison
