No day is the same for any of us. Often we are out of the office with meetings, or traveling across Iowa, or elsewhere working on issues or for organizations. For your reference, we are including some of our work – completed after 2005 – that is in the public domain. Successful outcomes are important, and within the process or as a result of our work, there are information, research, and reports of interest to many. Take a look. How kids channel their energy during out-of-school time often shapes their future. SPPG has conducted research, developed quality measures, provided training, and managed the statewide network of interested stakeholders in an array of endeavors beginning early in the last decade.
Since its very beginning, SPPG has sought and valued its work related to disabilities and is proud of the contributions we have made to policy and practice empowering people with disabilities to manage their lives. Over the years, SPPG has developed stigma-busting curriculum for elementary school-age children, developed and managed a loan program for assistive devices and telework options, facilitated planning processes, created an advocacy network of people with disabilities, and countless other activities and initiatives.
Individual, community, and state vitality hinge on unrelenting attention to economic growth and development. SPPG has been engaged in these areas since 1984, providing community outreach, planning, evaluation, and research in support of many programs over the years.
Education is where you find it. SPPG’s work in related to education includes consulting with community colleges, conducting a review of administrative reporting procedures, providing administrative services to educational programs, developing curricula, and designing graphics and materials for educational initiatives.
Emergency management matured and gained attention since the Midwest floods of 1993, and public safety and homeland security have, certainly, risen in importance since 1993. SPPG has worked in Iowa, the Midwest, nationally, and internationally since 1993 in planning, evaluation, training, community outreach and public education, as well as convening and facilitating key leaders in decisions around difficult issues.
Many of the greatest challenges are local in nature. Revitalizing a community, determining how to best serve veterans locally, and developing a local attraction are examples of how SPPG engages with local interests to work with them to achieve their goals.
SPPG is often called upon by non-profit organizations to support development and assist in initiatives that go beyond the sometimes-limited staff capacity of the nonprofit organization. Nonprofit organizations play a major role in providing services and are a critical part of the economy. SPPG has provided an array of services over the years.
SPPG is proud of its very diverse work with the private sector and is called upon for a wide range of support, technical assistance, and project management. Because SPPG has strong links and experience with the public and nonprofit sectors, it often is helpful in supporting projects and partnerships among all three sectors.
Linked in the minds of many, public health and health care are quite different. SPPG touches both topics through work is such efforts as research on health care reform in the states, advancing information about immunization, professional credentialing of direct care workers, and conducting statewide outreach to aid in the creation of the University of Iowa’s College of Public Health.
Sometimes things just don't fit in a neat box, and that goes for some of SPPG's work. While we've listed some of the common areas in which we work, there are always those unique issues and unique clients that call on SPPG. It is exciting to undertake new and different issues and services - they are all part of the world of policy.
Attention to workforce has never been more important as Iowa shifted from a worker shortage to a worker surplus in a matter of months. SPPG is committed to support these interests and priorities for the long term through such initiatives as management of workforce-related organizations, development of minority business training, and expanding options for pre-apprenticeship that allows youth an opportunity to explore occupations while completing high school.
