The Bowling Tradition
Team building is very important at SPPG. We work in teams, typically with a Team Lead, a Second, and others as necessary. When Ho, Wallenda, and Landfill begin their annual discussion about bowling, it means SPPG will soon be partaking in its annual fall Bowling Day.
For nearly ten years, all of the SPPG Pin Knockers convene at a local bowling alley, are divided into teams by the Commissioner, and bowl competitively in an elimination tournament. Commissioner Nancy Witt puts together the team based on her own mathematical/handicapping/beer consumption formula to develop an appropriate competitive balance among the Teams.
Bowling is a great event. After trying golf, Chinese Boat races, and picnics, SPPG settled on bowling as one of our annual all-staff events. It is an equal opportunity sporting event.
Each staff person is provided an authentic blue/green-bowling shirt with very large embroidered bowling pins on the back with the famous Pin Knocker logo; and on the front, the bowler’s “nickname.” These names are given by the Bowling Naming Committee for life, sewn on to the shirt and presented to any new staff at the bowling event. There is typically a reason a name is given to an individual, but no one has yet determined exactly whom the Bowling Naming Committee is and how these names are decided. It always seems that the name depicts some personal, professional, or unusual aspect of the person named.
